A dark horse of the industry, he's far from unacquainted with the charts, responsible for countless astounding remixes which have cemented his name deep in the dance music world. The British born DJ and producer is rapidly becoming one of music's golden boys, recently seeing a digital download takeover with almost every latest track stamped with the Woods' name, topping almost every chart.
Radio stations and DJs such as Pete Tong have been constantly throwing props his way, with Woods recently making an appearance on Tong’s 15 minutes of fame, in which he managed to calmly charm the audience. With new and notable collaborations under his belt, such as his recent productions with Chris Lake, there is no shortage of praise at Mr Woods’ table, which has rapidly gained him a large hoard of hungry followers. If you’re not familiar with his sound, the best way to describe it would be an array of melodious synths cascading onto rhythmical pounding drums, dashed with the emotions of tranquillity and nostalgia, complemented by glimpses of classical inspiration. Remixes like ‘Feels Like A Prayer’ on Toolroom Records and Deadmau5’s ‘Strobe’ on mau5trap are proof of his abilities but not the only examples of his artistic prowess as he continues to globetrot around clubs rocking their stages like it is nothing but a normality.
His polished appearance coupled with his hunger for success, his motivation and his creativity has secured him a firm base, which makes it hard to see him falling from his exalted position anytime soon. Renowned artists such as Deadmau5, The Temper Trap and Way Out West have all sought after his impeccable remixing skills, where he reworks their unique originals embellishing them with the distinctive Michael Woods sound. Nowadays his focus is mainly directed at his own personal progression, putting much time and effort into developing his label Diffused Music, which was launched in September 2008 and through which releases such as ‘Yemba’, ‘Dropzone’ and the ‘Envolver EP’ have been born.
From an early age, Michael was classically trained, giving him the tools and knowledge needed to carve a career in a cutthroat industry. Attending a musical college was not enough to satisfy his needs, as he often spent his spare time messing around with whatever instrumentation he could get his hands on, propagating a love for music that continues to evolve. A few years down the line and nothing has changed, you can still catch him camping out in his London based studio crafting his next moves.
This year Michael continues to tour with Deadmau5, which in turn has gained him a residency at the infamous Balearic treasure, Amnesia Ibiza, for Cream this summer. Along with slots at Pete Tongs Wonderland and Mark Knights' Toolroom Knights events, the Woods fan base and clientele continues to grow by the minute. With Woods about to reach new heights in 2010, we can confidently say that he has in no way reached the zenith of his artistry, but rather that this is another evolution in his accomplished career.
